frame paint's coming on. 2 coats of red oxide primer, 4 coats of gloss, many sheets of 1200 wet & dry.

the paint is from http://www.withamgroup.co.uk/default.asp?page=364witham oil, whcih is by royal appointment, ie. the queen of england buys this product. the brush is a windsor and newton cotman 666, 3/4" the work req'd for this sort of finish is many, many hours. the imperfections in the second photo are the remains of the frame number stampings.

This is brush work!?! Amazing.

not amazing, just time consuming. you'd have to be a right glutton for punishment to even contemplate doing it. the only other frame i brush painted took 18 coats before i got one i was happy with. almost all of each coat is removed by 1200 wet & dry leaving only paint in the low spots.
it was an excellent commuter, until a ford escort hit me and bent it.

here it was, when first built

Wow, great work. Those rims look awesome!

Looking great, love the theme! We have been thinking of going to York, are you camping? my wife has trawled through the site but cant find any mention of costs etc. for the camping?
Totally 'off topic!'' But we live up in Durham, and I've been doin my family tree for about the last 6-7yrs   :D and My lot all come from the Lincoln and later Boston area we have had more than a few days down there and your LAMB PIES ARE BEAUTIFULL!!!! Me second name is ATTERBY by the way
BORIS.

i'll definitely be at the york show.

i've signed up for the FNRRTC we leave york minster at midnight, over the big bridge and arrive at cleethorpes for breakfast. 70 miles through the night.
then, once we've driven back to york midmorning on saturday, it'll be rest and lol about for a bit. at around 1900 the velovision crew ride off to the ship in, and i'll be amongst them. a few of us will go on from the ship and have too many beers, as is traditional.

if you want to join us for some ale on saturday, i'll pm you my mobile number

i think i've mastered the art of painting with a brush. what do you lot think? :?

sorry progress has been slow, i've been practising/experimenting with different crafts in my secret bunker trying to assemble a unique ****** ***. i'm nearly there with that as well, so all will be revealed soon

I think you have it sussed!!! I'm a paintsprayer at a ford main dealership and most of my work is accident repair but everynow and then my bosses will bring in a 'project' to work on.....a few years back we restored an old model Y and I rollered it gloss black coat after coat after coat and flatted it back each time in the end the finnished result was a sheet of glass ....top marks to you mate!

yes thanks, i got it from ebay.co.uk (Item number: 280509595317)

you weren't to know, but having tried it on a utility bike, i wouldn't use it on a best bike.
it's OK if you want to write information on tyres and you're not bothered about a fine finish, but for our sort of work it's next to useless - not reccomended :(

maybe you might be better off removing that orange logo.
There's a topic about removing logo's from schwalbe fatfranks, i bought a pair of those for my "molested".
I'm gonna try to remove the logo's too, with sandpaper and water.
maybe it works on your tires aswell. Just be carefull sanding.

If you still wish to try it; i read somewhere, about some guys using the touch up paint markers for scratches on cars.
Maybe try a white base first and paint over it with green.

OK togglers. progress on the paint has been slow, the tyre pen is a waste of time, but i seem to have made some progress in an area that up until now has been secret.

so here, for anyone who's interested, is the story of a prototype saddlebag.

i quite liked the shape of the green one below, as opposed to carradice who make brilliant bags but don't do the colour i'm after.

here's a pic of one identical to the one i got from ebay.

jamesnew1.jpg

and here's some manx tweed* in the right colour. if you can recall my wheels, i think you'll agree it'll look quite dashing
* other tweeds are available

14610b001.jpg

then, i wasted weeks trying to find something to stiffen the tweed with. finally i found some pelmet hessian from dunelm mill. it's like tightly woven sack cloth, impregnated with some glue or polymer. simply apply a generous amount of waterproof PVA to it

saddlebag001.jpg

weigh it down overnight between two rejects of kitchen worktop

saddlebag002.jpg

and you'll find that you've got stiffened tweed. excuse my eldest, he's the oppposite of camera shy  in this pic is also the cheap and nasty vinyl one.

saddlebag003.jpg

so draw round and measure what it is you wish to reproduce.

saddlebag004.jpg

trim with some leather furniture place's offcuts that can be had cheaply off ebay

saddlebag005.jpg

start with some tack welds, that aren't welds.

saddlebag006.jpg

more trimming

saddlebag007.jpg

then with 4mm shoulder bridle leather and buckles again from ebay, make up your fixings and erm, fix.

who knows, maybe in the next few weeks i'll have this and the bike finished off
