    The TRAIN RAT

Hello Rat Rodders! My first real rat begins now. I recently acquired a Schwinn Mesa http://ratrodbikes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=25694 Which I am building to leave at the train station for a couple months while I intern at a theater. I'm trying to put very little money into it and make it...

Schwinn Mesa [hand me down] TRAIN RAT and then...?

A buddy I work with got a new bike because his old clunker finally gave out on him--something to do with the rear wheel and the bearings being shot. I haven't dug in yet so I'm not too sure. But I decided to grab the bike, because at the very least there were still a bunch of useful parts on it...

    Specialized HardSNOT!

An easy beginning to what should be a leisurely build. The Hardrock was a recent alley find: http://www.ratrodbikes.com/forum/viewto ... 16&t=18232 The tear down went really smoothly. One size allen wrench and one sized socket for the whole bike! And for the first time I had all the tools in...

Alley Garbage #2: Specialized Hardrock Sport

I'll have to look into the details of the bike, but I was certainly surprised to find this in a pile of garbage late Friday night. From what I've read this is a decent entry level mountain bike. Which is pretty exciting because I've had a desire recently to give mountaineering a chance. :wink...

    It'll be a T-shirt

So, this is pretty far off topic, but exciting for me. I have been lucky to meet up with the guys at RIPT Apparel (http://riptapparel.com/). They print t-shirts for one day only and then they're gone--a pretty cool idea, I think. So, on July 20th the above drawing will be available as a...

    Alley find: 20" Dyno

Over the weekend on an alley kruise with my lady I found a crusty, surprisingly heavy Dyno frame. I'm going to scrap it for parts--thinking it might be useful for a klunker build. If anybody is looking for a 20" bmx frame lemme know. I will start the tear down today and get some pics up.

    Cork Grips

Hey gang-- Do any of you have any advice on cork grips? Coat them with shellac? Will they lose that soft feel if you do? Hairspray and WD-40 don't work so I found people use Household Hogar by GOOP. Any other options? CORK is KING

    Sturmey Archer 3-Speed setup ?

(There may already be a thread on this.) I am trying to figure out how to reconnect the cable to the hub and don't understand what I'm missing. Is this a snug fit? I don't remember losing any parts when I dismantled everything. Any help or pointing towards help would be great. thanks.

    Adjustable Cup bottom bracket

I'm starting to piece together my 1980ish Raleigh. this is my first experience with an adjustable cup bottom bracket and I've found a little bit of info on them, but I'm hoping somebody has had some experience with them... :| First off, I have to go out and buy 2 new wrenches. Any pointers...

    Coaster Brake catching UPDATE :(

After putting new tires on my bike I took it out for a spin. As usual I forgot to bolt the coaster brake back to the frame, so I .... near racked myself. The wheel got locked so I walked it home. I thought I got things back in action, but the coaster brake seems to be catching as I pedal which...

    Middleweights, lightweights & heavyweights

Anybody know what makes a middleweight a middleweight, etc.... I've only really heard these terms in regards to Schwinn bikes. Just curious.

    In the Bag

stepper's thread: http://www.ratrodbikes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=11209 got me thinking about creative bag solutions. As the weather gets warmer and my rides get longer I have to decide what is less cool--excessive back sweat or bags. I'm trying to think of something that doesn't involve a...

    Schwinn Speedometer

I have an old ladies Collegiate (?) at my folks place that I'm using for parts. I don't have too much interest in the bike itself. There's an old speedometer that I'm thinking could be fun, but it's just the gauge--no cable going to the wheel etc. I'm wondering, has anyone reset the odometer...

    Fat Tires...Skinny Tires?

My natural impulse is to put the biggest tires I can find on my bikes--balloon tires are aces. But in terms of speed on a bike you're looking for less tire to road surface area. I road my brother-in-law's road bike and it was like floating on the road and fast as all get-out. The tires on that...

    1980 Raleigh

As I finish up with the detail work on my Corvette I'm starting a bike for my wife. I'm gonna turn this brown cruiser into a green machine. The bike is really in great shape with the exception of some heavy-duty tire rot -- it's like they melted to the rim! It's gonna take some elbow...

    Down in Illinois

Hello Gang-- I came across this site in one of my random google image searches. It was pretty exciting for me to find a bunch of people interested in rusty old bikes too! I'm a graphic artist, mainly illustration and graphic design (print) http://www.donovanfoote.com. This is my first online...
