What a great bike day. I was at Brimfield antique fair in MA and found me a 20" Royce Union Muscle Bike. No plans for this one other than possibly a more comfortable glitter banana seat (this is narrow!). Other than that, keep it original!
Is this a pretty rare bike? Searching the interwebs i could only find one other that was far from original. By the construction I am pretty sure it is Japanese. Seems really high quality, much more so than the craptastic Royce Unions after Huffy bought them out. Cottered cranks. Fenders have an interestig flair out along the length. You guys have any idea of a date on it? No reflectors on the pedals if that helps? I was guessing late 60's?
I saw this little beauty on the first day, went back 5 days later and it was still there. It was fate! It looked like it hadn't been ridden in 40 years. Big and little 20" whitewalls that look as old as the bike. Sky high sissy and 3-speed stick shift had me sold. Add to that the saddle bag basket and it was a no brainer.
So I walked this bike on its flat tires the mile stretch that this antique fair covers, to the gas station. 75 cents in air, and I was riding!! Rode all over that place! I can't tell you guys how many comments I got cruising around. Cars stopped to talk to me abut it.
Love the paint!
Such a strange frame geometry. Lugged construction. Sever curve to the middle bars which connect really low on the down tube.
THis bike is so original I can't believe it! Down to the grips!
Pedals are tiny, no reflectors. But even say Royce Union on them.
Such mojo with the saddle bag basket. Old chain and lock. Note the glitter tassle hanging off of it! That is a 20X2.125 rear tire. I almost think a 20X3 would fit if the fender braces were wider..
bit of that extra flair on the fender edge.
Got even better when I found a license plate with my name on it, and from FLA where I was born.
Love to know what y'all think!
