Electrolysis
I feel the need to pass this on
I am using a 50 gal plastic drum
One box Arm& Hammer washing soda
Those copper coated scrubies
12volt battery charger
Rubber Gloves
I have removed mega rust ,paint, clear coat with great success.
The process is slow yet very efficient
Please remember all those darling little bubbles making that nice white foam is Hydrogen gas
Yea that stuff that they used in the Hindenburg
IT’S FLAMMABLE
That being said it is not going to destroy the world either
Do this outside at your own risk.
I am showing you what I did and I am not suggesting you try it.
Stainless Steel is a no no Makes a highly toxic by product.
Dissolves non ferrous metals.
Cast iron and Steel it’s awesome cool.

First test piece
The small chrome piece on top of my new American
This one goes quick
Second Heavily Painted fender and fork
This will take a lot of time from start to finish but actual hands on time will not be more than a couple hours total.
Let’s begin

First the Drum has to be plastic it cannot conduct electricity.
I used 3 pieces of angle iron, Rebar works fine. They go to the bottom of the tank.
I just drilled two holes and wired them to the tank
Wire the 3 anodes or sacrificial rods.(the angel iron) in series
Fill with water
Add one box washing soda (get this at Wallsmart)
Use washing soda for two very important reasons
1 it’s cheep
2 it works the best with 12 volts
This must be mixed very well (please read again ) I used a Dry wall mixer and ran it for 5 minutes.
IMG_2033.jpg

The positive lead goes on the anodes
The negative goes on the part being cleaned.

I just lay a piece of wood across the top and use copper wire for the leads.
Make sure the paint is removed where the wire makes contact.
Suspend the part in the solution, MAKE SURE IT CANNOT TOUCH THE ANODES (dead short)

I will hang all 3 pieces at the same time it will not hurt if they touch each other.
Stay tuned

Ok I suspended all 3 parts in the tank and connected the charger.

IMG_2276.jpg

Remember positive on the anode, negative on parts. VERY Important !

The charger is drawing 6 amps and will settle down to about 3.
Let’s let it run for at least two hours.
We will see the chrome piece come clean.
There will not be much change on the painted parts on the first cleanings.
I cannot get over how well this works.
We must be patient young grasshopper.

Re: Electrolysis

Ok folks remember we are just starting.
The Chrome piece first
We will take it out of the tank and it will look worse
IMG_2304-1.jpg

Now rub it down with the scrubie.
IMG_2305-1.jpg

Wow looks better

Do the painted parts next
IMG_2306-1.jpg

IMG_2316.jpg

Ok this is not working
Young Grasshopper patience
We spent 5 minutes doing this
Back in tank at least 2 hours, longer just fine but you have lost the process of cleaning.

More on the way

Re: Electrolysis

Ok I took the chrome piece out disconnected the wire scrubbed it very good with scrubby and clear coated it.

The painted parts will stay in the tank till morning.

Stay Tuned same Vat Time same Vat Station

Re: Electrolysis

I've had a box of washing powder sitting in my utility room for 3 years after studying this process and I've never gotten around to it, but saw amazing results on a 4x4 forum.

Keep in mind it works "line of sight" so moving the parts to face the anodes is important.

The liquid created is rich in iron and does good for some fruit trees and other plants. Perfectly safe to just pour out on your lawn.

The line of site is very true
I have concerns about the amount of toxins in the paint. I remove a lot of paint.
Yea clear coat on chrome frames GONE!!

Ok just keep repeating till clean.
Minimum 3 hours in vat, after that the process just slows way down.
We are drawing one to three amps.
I run it on trickle charge.
I will start it on boost the first half hour of the first dipping.

Three to Six cycles till done.

I will take pictures of the after cleaning on each of the remaining cycles
I have unplugged the charger and left parts in vat for a couple of days when I knew I would not have time to get to it.
It may take me a week but I will only spend an hour or two total.
I have been using the same water all summer .
The muck at the bottom is about 2 inches deep
Mix about one quarter cup of washing soda (MIX WELL) to every 5 gallons of water you add.

Re: Electrolysis Fork Is Done

This thread is my Christmas Gift to you all. This site as given me much and it is time to give some back. As long as we continue to share our Knowledge & ideas, treat each other fair when dealing back and forth no one member will have it all but every member will have. The richness will come in seeing and enjoying what each has done. We all have our favorite style of builds but… just like music you may not have it in your collection but that does not mean you cannot enjoy it when you here it. Merry Christmas Happy New year

Deep thoughts
