Wards Hawthorne

Hey Rat Rodders,
I'm pretty sure this is a Wards Hawthorne. I just uncovered the serial number on the bottom bracket when I was sandblasting the frame. The serial number is "D40979" there is also a "2" on the bottom bracket in a different spot.
Can anyone help me decode it so I can get a year?

It's likely a Cleveland Welding-built frame and that number jives with their style. But photos will definitely help with the IDing.
