VW Shifter on 24'' Schwinn Sting Ray

Heres my shifter I finished yesterday. Its the top 8'' from a VW Beetle shift lever, the bottom, I made from 1'' x 1/8'' flat stock, and the pivot at the bottom I made from a tin can top, folded in half, and cut to about a 1/2'' wide. Need to make a shifter stop, to limit forward lever travel.

Thanks, Can't make up my mind, if I like the lever silver, or to paint it black... what do you think? I need to strip that black paint off the rear rim, and put on my large Schwinn mag sprocket, like I said I was going to do awhile back, that Varsity sprocket is gearing it too low, and sure doesn't look right with the chain guard, and what happened to the brown leather grips I was going to make? The rear brake is my project for today.
