tire size on my collegiate

found and bought a pretty cool ladies schwinn collegiate last night on craigslist for 40.00 .... gonna be my wifes new pedaller

it has the 590 schwinn rims and 26 x 1 3/8 tires with the skinnier fenders

my question:
how much bigger tire can I run?
maybe 1.5, or 2 inch whitewalls?

I'm not sure what the 590 rims are, but if they are Schwinn specific tires you can only run the 26 x 1 3/8

The Schwinn specific rim was a 597 (S-6) also a 26 x 1 3/8.
the 590 (E.A.3) was used on other 3 speeds and lower-end 10 speeds.
Tires for the 590 are available while for the 597 they are harder to get.
You can't go wider on that rim.

i saw some posts in here with a few guys putting wider rims/tires on a collegiate,
but this thing has 1 inch or so rims!
just bought some kenda blackwalls for it.... way skinny!
but the wifey likes it....
