how rare are these and what didn they go on? i'm getting ready to buy a bunch of stuff from a local old man that use to have a bike shop long ago. i seen he had 4 or 5 hanging from the rafters.

I have not a clue! I know that French and English derailleur systems moved to 1/2" pitch pretty early on, long before American bicycles used them standard so it'd have to be pretty early--teens 20s?

I was looking around and saw somewhere that Shimano used to make a cassette with the two biggest gears having a skiptooth setup, probably for smoothness going into low gear. Any chance it was a newer setup like that?

might be,i only noticed the bigger cogs, when i go back i will check. i'm gonna buy them, he's wanting to get rid of everything and he's dirt cheap. 5 bucks for his skiptooth sprockets and cranks. 8 bucks for chains. when i pick them up i will spread the wealth. thanks
