So, Im wanting to do a 1x7 (or 8 or 9...depends on the rear wheel I find).

Does it mater what kind of front chainring I use? Im wanting to use an old school 44T BMX sprocket up front.

Type of chain?

Sorry, Im drivetrain/chain dumb.

You need a 3/32" chain compatible chainwheel to use with a rear derailleur. Some BMX chainwheels work with both 3/32" and 1/8" chains. A single speed chainwheel designed only for 1/8" chains will not work.

It needs to be a 3/16" front sprocket and chain. Check out http://www.porkchopbmx.com . They have some really cool American made aluminum sprockets with an old school flair.

Did you mean 3/32" instead of 3/16" ?

Yes, we run 3/16" chain on several bikes at work and it has infected my brain.

Wrap a 3/32" chain around it. It'll either fit all the way in between the teeth all the way around, or it won't. As far as buying online, it's pretty annoying that they often don't specify. Usually the one-pc. crank sprockets are 1/8", and the 3 and 5 bolt rings are 3/32".
