I'm trying to work out a seat post that fits into a 5/8 inch tube. I think I may have to find bar stock or tube that fits and shim it out to fit the seat clamp, but I was wondering if you guys had any better ideas. THanks,

Hi
check this out
http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&rh=n:3404941,p_4:Wald&page=1
you will probably find what your looking for
Wald manufactures/used to manufacture 5/7 to 7/8 seatposts (allowing fitting a standard modern saddle on prewar bikes)
search ebay for them too
it will probably be easier for you if you live in the US as it was for me living in Europe...
but the people at Wald's are really helpful  ;o)
hope this helps
cheers

[EDIT]: I checked with them, altought they do not appear on their updated website, they still manufacture them.
