so i was going to just replace the handle bar on my bike with a cheapo one, but I found out its a schwinn, so I just went ahead and try to restore it. I spend about an hour removing rust from the handle bar and I got most of the surface rust off. now I have this problem with these black rust that wont come off, im using wd40 and brass brush. Is there a way to clean this without rechroming the whole thing?


ps I checked the how to manual about rust, but it just seems to deal with simple surface rust.

I've got handlebars ruined by rust, I'm going to spray them with Plasti-Kote Brilliant Metallic Silver.

do you have a pic of the painted handle bar? if I cant fix i might as well pay the $10 for a cheapo handle bar. I just wanted to use as much of the original schwinn parts as possible.

I haven't done it yet due to weather, I did a rim - it looks like an alloy rim but brighter, not the shine of chrome but a lot better than rust!
