My dad dropped by today and gave me an old Rudge he got from one of his friends. looks like it just needs a hunk of leather and a shifter cable! :D

Nice! Looks like a 50's bike. There's probably a 2 digit date code on the rear hub shell that will give you the year it was made.

11 56 would be November of 1956.
 
One of the coolest chainrings ever!
 
Nice score; those old Nottingham "Sports" bikes are some of the best all-round riders ever made.

If you part it out, I'm looking to buy a crankset like that.
 
Put a set of Kool Stop pads on it, the red ones. That will help the braking somewhat.
 
If the chrome is gone, maybe take a wire wheel to the rims, at least on the surfaces where the pads contact.
