Hey thanks for the interest in helping me, I called my lbs and they said they have done it before, they give the crank to a machine shop. he said it works fine. so now I'm thinking I can do it by buying the taps of eBay, they are the same price as the adapters and I can do it more than one bike, and I don't have extended pedals.

I have thought about it before, but i thought it was expensive. I have little experience with that and thought the re-tap would be easier and less money and headache in case I bought everything wrong and nothing fit.

you will also need to drill the hole out with the correct drill size first, and then tap the new hole.

I suggest that you use a drill press and a vice to hold the crank. The hole must be straight.

If you drill it by hand, you will probably "hog" the hole out and ruin the crank.

obvious question: why did the LBS send the cranks out to a machine shop? See above.

Another option is to get a 3-pc adapter crank.

The new walmart cruiser bikes (schwinn, huffy and others) have a one piece crank that's a 9/16. Love the pedals they are using on them new schwinn. They really hold my 270 + weight!

Does anyone know if the newer Schwinn's with a one piece crank with 9/16 pedals fit or work with a 1961 middle weight frame? Can they be swapped straight across or do I have find other size crank bearings? I really don't have much if any experience removing or taking a crank out of a bike, don't get me wrong I'm pretty good with my hands! But I have not done it before. I have had newer mountain bikes that i would take to my local bike shop for that type of repairs...

I have install those new cranks on pre war bikes. I think it will work for you. The fork head set is another story. They tend to be different specially if the new schwinn frame is aluminum.
