Is there anything special about Mattatuck hubs? I see them on EBAY seem to go for same as any other vintage hubs.I bought a 61 Schwinn Flying Star that has one. just wondering :?: thanks Tom
They were I believe purchased by New Departure at some point. There are a number of parts interchangable between the two. I don't see them very often, but I don't think they are rare or extremely valuable.
this hub was used on most of the very rare bowden space lander bikes,,,they used two type hubs,,,,so if you need a hub for that bike i think you can get more,,,i paid 200.00 for a few nos hubs for my bikes
The Mattatuck hubs were built right here in my hometown of Waterbury CT. They were an independent company, but New Departure bought them in the 1940's. The Mattatuck hubs contain similar internals to New Departure Model D hubs, including the same bearings. Great hubs, if they're still working, they'll keep working for quite a long time.
It's astonishing how much bike stuff was built in central Connecticut in the first half of the 20th century.
Blueboy - thanks for posting that information. I knew about the buyout, but was unaware of when it had happened. I also knew about the similar parts - I have some nos Mattatuck stuff - but it was good to have that info confirmed.
