Re: Jacked Up Pilot, build within a build

Steve, can't wait to see those 'blueing' pics.
On the chain clearance, are you set on that front chainring? I had a Wald unit like it on my Fatbelly Bobber and had 'slight' rubbing too. I noticed that one on a Schwinn is 'dished' (see below). I flipped it so it dished out, it gave me about 3/16" clearance, no more tire rub....

Good luck!
Cheers,

Right you are DrT, thanks! By the time I got done with the long build up I wasn't thinking straight
My wife likes it because it's "different" but it needs to work
I was fighting 1 twisted crank, 1 bent crank, a bent chainring and the one that's on now it's exactly the most true either
61Jun12378II.jpg

I'll swap in one of the other dished ones, like you say.

I'm going to try something else too. I noticed hub gears are loose on the hub and rattle (drives me crazy)
So I'm going to try an O-ring behind it or some type of wavy washer or strong gasket
That should get rid of the rattle and give me another mm
The hub gear is sightly dished too

If anybody has any other ideas or tricks about the hub gear rattle I'm open to it

I'll be getting to the bluing this weekend finally.
Thanks for looking
Steve

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, build within a build

Alright, so I refocused on JUP.
Ground on the brazing for about 4 hours Friday night
Haven't talked about the rattling in the frame that's driving me crazy
There is some (factory) holes in the bottom back tubes
and little pieces of rust coming out every time I move it :x
Slight enlarged the holes and shook and vacuumed for about and hour until I got them all out

Finally got it to this point for bluing.
IMG_6541II.jpg

So I used the regular strength liquid and I had mixed results
I'm sure its because of my lack of experience that it came out kinda nonuniform
It's not horrible but I'm going to work on it more
IMG_6543II.jpg

Had a lot harder time "working in" the liquid bluing and it had a lot more water content
Then it dripped to the other parts and made it even more uneven
It set up an almost instant light rust in all the pits and edges.
IMG_6545II.jpg

Used the propane to kinda dry it like before
Must have kept it on too long (~8m) while I tried to get the whole thing done (for more even coating/burning)

Now I'm trying to buff out the light rust and some of the darkness level with fine steel wool and old sock
It seems to be working because I've been able to get it to shine again but it will take a while

Need to manage my expectations about how this is going to look but can't help keep wanting it the way I want it

Sorry about the weak update but will get more done soon
Thanks for looking
Steve

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, blued the whole frame, mixed results

You probably didn't see, but on my G.I.JESSE JAMES build (which is no longer my build-off bike) I blued the suspension fork and it rusted overnight. Mine wasn't uniform either, but I liked the effect. I am going to remove the rust and try going over it with linseed oil to see if I can stop the rust.

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, blued the whole frame, mixed results

I am really not too familiar with the Bluing process. I do know that my Nirve Cannibal has an almost bare metal finish. It looks like they did a light silverish wash and then put on some layers of gloss clear on it. You can see the weld joints very well. Check out the photos here.

How did you apply the liquid blue? After working with it quite a bit restoring old rifles I found it easiest to get a nice uniform coat by applying it with a pad of 000 steel wool. Get the pad saturated and you can really kinda work it in.

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, blued the whole frame, mixed results

Looks good, hope you work out the flaws  Did you ever think of doing just bare metal? :?

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, blued the whole frame, mixed results

The Freaky Bunnies are getting hungry for an update!!!!!!

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, blued the whole frame, mixed results

Like this bike and the idea for the blued frame, in fact I briefly considered do that my self for the build off, but decided to paint instead. Here's a link to a product that I use to blue muzzle loaders and to restore old guns. The only caveat is that it gives a black finish instead of a blue one. http://www.shootersolutions.com/gunblue.html. You still have to oil it afterwards but it might be worth a try if you don't get satisfaction any other way.

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, blued the whole frame, mixed results

Thanks Youthgeye for the tip, I think I'm going to clear coat mine but I like the idea of oiling it too
Hey Kingfish, Thanks for sharing your Nirve bike, I like seeing the welds
Thanks TVC15, sorry I keep putting it on hold

Thanks Green P1 for the trick. I think that may have helped (saturated)
I think now when I touch it up and/or do it again I'm going to use the paste
There seems to be less water associated with it which seems to produce less rust

Thanks Nick for the support :D Your bare metal bike looks fantastic!
Mine's too pitted to leave without some kind of finish

Kingfish: I knew the bunnies were coming
I actually don't have an update yet but though I better respond before the bunnies attack

Finished the Eliminator for my Nephew flying in today
Went through the Spaceliner for my Wife and my trip next Friday , Chicago, here we come!
Now I can get working on JUP, should have an update by Sunday/Monday
I've been jonesing to get to JUP but "life" has been getting in the way

Great video Motopsyco, thanks, it helps :D
I have a plan to even out a few spots, polish it and then clear coat it

Also I think I'm going to sand blast the Chukker rims because I don't think the white works with the mood of the bike
I'LL GET DONE! It just may be a little close though

21May mockup again for a reminder, can't believe it's been over a month :?: :!:

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, Clearcoat frame, rims started

Well I jacked around with the frame for another hour and thought good enough(!)
Got the bluing evened out a bit more and tried to match the fork
2 coats of clear so far, it darkened substantially but think it will still look shiny underneath
IMG_6792II.jpg

Maybe it will look different in the sunshine, I'm okay with how it looks

Then started getting the rims to bare metal
Decided that this build just didn't look right with whitewalls
I agree with Kingfish and the white rims kinda made it look like that way
IMG_6789II.jpg

Think I'll have to have a professional lace the rims at this point , I'm trying to follow my own advice
"Don’t get too crazy with ideas that can’t be self made"

So another coat or two of clear and it will be ready for some assembly after a short vacation
Thanks for looking
Steve

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, Clearcoat frame, rims started

Lookin good Steve! Keep up the good work! I'm gonna have to steal the blueing idea though!

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, Sunshine shots of blued frame

Thanks Pick :D I'll try to keep going (after vacation)
It would be awesome to see someone with actual skills try blue a frame

My limited experience tips are:
1) Use the paste, saturation is key (youthgeye and video mentioned it)
it's easier to get a smaller area saturated without dripping on another (and uneven tones)
Less water (and rust) involved too
2) Really lightly use a green 3M pad until you get the shade you want or light small dark spots
this will take off the shine
3) Shine/buff it with 0000 steel wool to get a nice shine
3) Buff again with a old sock (or rag of your choice) like polishing a shoe
4) Clearcoat it as quickly as possible before any rust forms
5) If you don't like it, take it off and try again, you can do it (eventually) in minutes

Alright, now the sunshine shots
It looks rather dark at this angle
IMG_6793II.jpg

But if you look at it closer then you can see the tinted metal under the pound of clear coast I sprayed on it
IMG_6795II.jpg

I'm started to like it a lot :D

Thanks for all the support from you guys,
It was a tough thing to get right (at first) but with your help, I got it done

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, Sunshine shots of blued frame

Those BOA-G's are too cool.
I guess I need to make it a point to add those to my cool tire collection.

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, Sunshine shots of blued frame

Looking great! As you've now realized, the key with bluing is trial and error over and over and over... but after you get through the first project it'll be second nature to you.

As nice as that clear looks over your frame I might just put a little clear over the next wall hanger rifle I re-do.

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, Sunshine shots of blued frame

Looks really cool blued!

Re: Jacked Up Pilot, Sunshine shots of blued frame

Another Tuff bike!! I need to see the next phase so...GTB!!! Peace
