Cool...

I love the names 'Sport', 'Starfighter' 'Flying Dutchman'...yet they are all the basic same looking granny bike, for the last 50 years!!! LOL

Oppps

Opppps...sorry that sounds rather rude. I ment to say 'a design as functional and practical as these fine dutch bikes is truely timeless'

Sorry Karl...

I agree.. Sorry There just not my type.

My Buddie Owns a Bike Shop in Vancouver and He sell New,
and Vintage Dutch Bikes.

They Are The Schwinn's of European Bikes.

They are built Tuff as Nails...and Twice as Sharp!
Very Popular with a Certain Crowd ,here for sure.

I personally think they are as Ugly as a Mud Fence,

But I would have to agree they are built VERY well!

Kev.

gotta love the dynos and drum brakes just imagine if the powers that be in the American bike companys truley made bikes that last and were to be ridden everyday thru any weather conditions for 30 years

Sorry guys, forgot about posting the link.
You guys just wait until you see my dutch diamond build-off!
And my foldingbike..

Easy,
What part of NL are you in? The wife and I are looking to take a couple weeks vacation over there next year. I have a couple of "friends" in Vledder, Drenthe (I think I got that in the right order) they are Airstream and American Hot rod owners.

That blog is hilarious, the guy seems pretty ignorant indeed,
but i like to explain some things.

Driving through Amsterdam in a car is hellish because you can not find a
parking space, and just imagine all these cyclists riding in cars.Impossible.

Nearly everyone has a bicycle, most depend on them everyday.
Note that the guy in black with tie also rides a classic bike that fits his suit.
On a mtb he would look stupid indeed.

Two people on a bike?
You got your bike with you, your buddy doesnt, hop on!

Helmets?Huh?

Dynamo,s mean free energy, the Dutch love anything that is free,
thats why we love bicycles, sailing and ice-skating.
I like free bikes, the city is littered with them,
i often have to stop myself from taking abandoned frames with me.
My girlfriends citybike is entirely built from scrapped parts,
the only thing new is the rearwheel, all parts are deliberitly unpainted to make it look ugly.
Which brings me to..

Huge locks on seemingly worthless bikes.
Dutch people are often blindly in love with their bicycles,no matter how
ugly or unsound/unsafe,because it gets them from A to B and back which
is often essential for them.
(everyone also firmly believe that their bike is the fastest)
(they are wrong, mine is the fastest.Off course)
Any functioning bike is in risk of being stolen, almost from between your legs, because any ten bucks buys an amount of dope for an addict.
So what you need,is a good functioning bike that looks as cheap as
possible and some hefty locks to make sure it doesnt get stolen, and then still, you can not protect your bike from the night-time bikemakers.

Badly or brightpainted bikes, make it easy to spot your bike between 2000
other bikes and can make it look real ugly too.

You can take youre folding-bike for FREE! on the trains, which explains their popularity.
A friend of my mother had her 2000 euro bromptons stolen 5! times.
