I think the first 9 sprockets are for show....it's really the guy in the back doing all the work...ha ha!

Maybe it's because with all 10 riders their was oddles of torque so they wanted to gear it up for top speed. The gear ratio might have been too much to do in one step, so they spread it out over the course of the whole bike. Then again, I might be making this up as I go.
