A question from the UK

I've noticed a few bikes from the states sporting licence plates, are these or were these regulation over there, if so for what purpose?

Some license plates were just novelty "cereal box toys" But I know that some states required a plate or sticker on the bike, some states may still do this?

Back in the day, they'd have a 'license your bike day' at school. The Police would do it, and kept a record of your bike's serial#. I think the 1st year I did it was 1979, and that year they went to decals as opposed to the old metal plates. I was disappointed! ~Adam

I know the small town where I live and the large town I'm near both still require bikes to be licensed although not in the form of a metal plate anymore. I don't think the license requirement is enforced though.
They say it's to help in identification in case of theft.

I wouldn't be surprised if in the not so far future bikes over here will have a licenseplate - there is talk to tax bicycles to get more state revenues :shock: talk about a crisis !
