26 inch tire tubes

I'm putting together a couple of old bikes that have 26 inch rims and tires. The bike shops around here tell me a 26 x 1.75 should fit but they are way too big. I understand there is a difference in the older tubes I just don't know exactly what to look for. I'm sure it's a simple solution but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure you don't have 24" rims?

Maybe you need a 26 x 1 3/8 tube like roadie tires.

If you have a tire that fits well on the wheel rim,tell us about all of the name & numbers that are on the tire.
