Hello everyone! I just joined the forum because my brother ChrisRomello did. Now that he just got a cool bike I now had to pull my old high school commuter out of the shed and start rebuilding it.

I believe it is a mid 90s Caloi sigma. That is at least what I hove found looking at similar bikes online. I’m sure someone on here can help me clerify the details. Anyway. My neighbor threw it out years ago when I was in middle school. I put air in the tires and that is all it needed. It was a fast bike and very light. It gave me many years of faithful service until the square tapered cranks finally wore out from the bolts always getting loose. So it’s been sitting unused for about 7 years now. We will see how things go with the build.

I want to do a single speed conversion. Would I have to weld in New bottom brackets or can I use these vertical ones?

You should be able to use the existing dropouts. Although you may need to cold set the frame to accommodate the more narrow single speed hub width between the 2 dropouts.

Ok. But I guess my question would be how would I tighten the chain?

Just take out the necessary links to achieve the desired chain tightness.
...and use a half link to fine tune.

I believe the frame is aluminum, so cold-setting is possible...but, could result in cracking. It would probably be more prudent to build up a single speed wheel with a hub that matches your current spacing.

I was at my LBS today and found that they have a few nice sets of wheels reasonably priced. I could get a hub with the proper spacing and just add spacers.
