I took apart a 1959 Hawthorn coaster brake and it is a little different. The brake arm says Hawthorn. I figured it was a Bendix or something. There are discs in there and machining for the disc ears just like a New Departure. There is no oil valve on the hub and it was too dry to turn. It is not a skip tooth, it has a 20 tooth 1/2 inch pitch cog. Any Idea what I have? I just put it together like a New Departure and oiled the discs. I can't find any other name on it except Hawthorn.

Yeah, I have one of those too. I thought it would look nice on a 40's Hawthorne (by Homer). I looked to Sheldon Brown's site that referred me to Mr. Southerland. His handbook link has "Hawthorne" in the title, but the link goes to pages that list only New Departure, Mattatuck and "NK".
NK may have been Nankai Tekko Company Japan; (makes me think 1970's).
The cog/sprocket might be interchangeable with most.

I know Bendix red band kickbacks used discs instead of shoes. Just a random bit of info...

keep the rubber side down!
I think it's an updated New Departure. The machining inside the hub is the same as the ND. It is missing the oil filler for the discs and has what I think is a Bendix cog, which looks the same as modern 3 notch cogs but is different enough that it won't fit. I wonder if Bendix bought New Departure and made it different?

I was wondering the same, or similar things. Wondered if ND became Bendix at one point due to the fact that I have seen Bendix hubs with the discs, read earlier that Bendix just used that design for the Red Band Kickback, I honestly do not know. But would like to know more!
