schwinn fender bold size??

What size thread is the bolt on an old schwinn dx......probably late 40s - 50s that threads into the fork crown from the bottom to hold the fork in the center of the fork? I have tried everything i have on hand and have nothing that works.

I attempted to hand thread my taps into there and it seems like a m5x0.9 will thread in and feels ok but im not sure this is the correct size.

Does anyone know what size this is?

I can't say for your bike in particular, but I have seen some that have a sheet metal screw in place of a machine screw. It most certainly would not be metric from the factory, but if it works, use it.

.9mm thread pitch is just over 28tpi. So, I would say if the M5 threads in but feels real sloppy...it is a #12-28 you need.

Mine is SAE 1/4 × 20.

Ha, the one I did was assembled with square nuts and round top machine screws. I just cleaned them up and reused them.
