Weird, I have no idea if it would work or not but I have heard the term Bio-pace crank thrown around, Kinda similar in theory.

Bio-Pace rings are just a variant of elliptical sprockets. The thing at the link appears to involve variable timing. Something similar from the late 50's or early 60's was posted here at one time. :|

Pretty typical weight for a steel bike. The tube has got to be pretty stiff to do the job normally done by 2. (or more) :|
