71 Varsity in my favorite Schwinn color.

I’ve tried 26 wheels on varsities and never found a braking solution that I like. 1080 brakes just don’t seem to have any stopping power. It sure does look cool though.

I had an Orange Varsity that I put 26" x 2.125 tires on. 5 speed. I rode the Silver Strand from North Island to Imperial Beach a lot in 86 and 87. I used a band brake for stopping. A California surfer dude said it was "trick". I guess that was a compliment.
I found the lock cut down in Imperial Beach, bike gone.

I would go with drum brakes 7 speed sturmey archer freewheel

Two sets of 1080's on the rear wheel, one for each hand. Add rotation stoppers, ("L" bracket) bolted under the brake pads to push on the frame. It will stop just fine!

Run it on inner tubes only and enter
