26" is the diameter of the bead. 3" is more or less how wide the tire is. The true width and height vary with the rim width. The narrower the rim, the skinnier and taller the tire. The wider the rim, the wider and shorter the tire. There's a thread or two kicking around with different 3" tire and rim combos.
Actually, it's a leftover from a bizarre system where the theoretical outer diameter of the standard tire when installed and inflated is used for the size designation. Thus, 26x1.75 rims and 26x13/8 rims are completely different, but they are both afew inches less than 26". Whacky doodle doo. :? http://www.biketiresdirect.com/a117/tir ... rticle.htm Nowadays, 26"tires that are labeled w/decimal widths all fit the same rim.
Exactly of every answers i looked for. Sheldon brown's website was also very helpful while i drift off on his other pages. heh. (bookmarked!)
I have 26" western flyer bike and wanted to use felt's thick brick tire which is 24"x3.00. So i gotta to look for a fully black 24"x1.75 wheels and with that, i will be able to slide it in the western flyer's original fork (not chopper or spring) since one say that the narrow wheels will narrow the width of the tire. That might possible will fill in the height's measurement to make it likely 25" or 26"?
Side note if need to know. The western flyer fork is 3 1/2 in between dropout and 2 1/2 in between of the upper area of the fork.
I just returned to this thread and realized some links to threads posting measurements and pictures could help. Felt tires aren't cheap or easily available. Making sure they work before purchasing them is a good idea. The first thread covers many 3" wide tires and the other two focus on Felt products.
