The bike I'm using is a 1946 JC Higgins I bought on ebay for $10. It was a local pickup 50 miles away. The raer wheel was siezed, It had numerous broken spokes as you can see and when I pulled the chain it made a nasty crunchy sound. When I saw the cheesy pics on ebay I thought it was covered with rust but it turned out to be the original burgandy paint.

Here's a photo after this morning's 9 miler. A beautiful 30 degree November morn. Got a little gravel-mud on her. The airline trail had a couple puddles my inner child just wouldn't let me avoid. So far I put 18 miles on her in 2 rides.
I basically just dissasembled it, refurbished the hubs, relaced the wheels, cleaned and replaced some bearings, put on a seat a guy in work gave me and polished til my hands were cramped up, useless hand-claws. Oh and I also swapped the crank arm and pedals and put new tubes and strips in it. I just couldn't touch the paint.
