Always clamp bikes by the seatpost. I've seen too many crumpled seattubes on bikes from guys that don't know what they were doing.

this one doesn't clamp down that hard but I'll test it out on a few tubes

I have the same stand. Just save yourself the hassle and clamp it by the seatpost. It would suck to scratch the paint.
