So here is the beginning of the project. I hadn't joined the forum until after I had dismantled the bike. But I figure you guys know what they look like anyway. :D The bike is a '84 Supercycle (Canadian Tire brand I don't know who makes it).

And here is a mock up of my thoughts on the bars.

I've added extensions to the bars and I'll post pictures soon. Yesterday though when I took the drive gear out I found that the bearings were completely ruined. :( I have no idea what I will do now because I have no income for new ones. Oh well. I'll figure it out. My plan is to swap out the 26" "skinny" wheels for 24" "wider" wheels so I can actually ride the bike (I'm only 5'7" with short legs). Also I have another road bike that the chrome is coming off the wheels so I'll be using these wheels on that.
I'll keep you posted with progress.

Re: My Road Bike I asked you's about.

Okay so I did a little today while trying to do loads of laundry. Here is the bars with the extensions I added. I don't have a welder so I riveted the extensions in place.

The forks were painted half way down and the rest was chrome. I took a grinder to the paint and found that it came out kinda shiny. So I'm wondering if I should make the whole bike a polished steel look? I'll decide later I guess.

I started taking the paint off the frame but I ran out of daylight. So once it's all stripped off I'll see whether or not I want to go with the polished steel look.

Those extended/flipped ram's horn bars look great.
Thanks I'm hoping to accomplish more on the bike this week. I finally decided on a color scheme so I should be able to get to that soon. Parts are going to take awhile though.

Re: My Road Bike I asked you's about.

So I finally got to my bike today. I was have issues deciding on the look. I've made my decision and here's what I've done so far today.

Seeing as how I don't have a welder...
155540_10150093320255396_509120395_7385648_2262802_n.jpg

A little bondo to cover it up...

I'll finish the rest of the sanding later. I sprayed the fork to see how my color will turn out. It looks orange in the picture but it's called "flame red". However when you place it next to a Coca-Cola label they are pretty dang close.

My bike is going to be a Coca-Cola bike... I am a collector of Coke "stuff" anyway. I thought it would be fitting as my first build. I'll post more hopefully later today.

Re: My Road Bike I asked you's about.

Thanks Schwinnray!

So I sanded and prepped the rest for paint.

But as I started to paint my stupid rattle can ran out :x So I have to go tomorrow and get more paint.

Re: My Road Bike I asked you's about.

It's looking pretty cool so far.

When the can starts getting really light, that's usually an indication you are running low on paint. ;)

Re: My Road Bike I asked you's about.

If I was your neighbor I'd show you how to make a Micro Wave Transformer Welder and then give you the parts.......but I'm wicked far away :( .

What you got looks great and I'm liking the whole thing. I want to see this when its finished..........I'm a Pepsi man myself. :|

Re: My Road Bike I asked you's about.

I found lots of small fab shops that will weld small projects for very small amounts of money , or a 6 pack. It just takes a little looking. The bars look really cool.

Re: My Road Bike I asked you's about.

Thanks for the comments guys!
Intrigued about the homemade welder... Sounds um...dangerous? and fun!
Uncle Stretch, I am sure I probably could find someone to lend a welding hand. For some reason though I have it in my mind that for my first "official" build I have to do everything myself or it's not truly mine. Call me crazy I guess. This also forces me to figure out how to get the results I am looking for with only the resources I have. Is that weird or does it make some sort of sense?
I aim to learn from this build as many "I should have done this differently" things as I can so that the next one is an improvement. And I keep learning as I go. I see lots of posts with tips for others and I learn from those so that when the time comes I'm not completely clueless. Best thing I've ever done was sign up for this site. :D
For my bars I am planning on tightly wrapping the black area in twine for grips. I'm a little stumped at the moment though as to how to keep it in place. Any thoughts on this?

Drill a small hole (just big enough to thread your twine through) on the under side of the bars where you want the grips to start. Thread the twine into the bars and out the open end. Tie a knot in the end and pull the knot back to the inside of the hole. Wrap the bars and when you get to the end of the bars tuck the end into the bars and use a cork to secure it. Now take your new grips and dip them into some shellac to seal them and give them a nice amber color. Dip and dry, dip and dry. Two or three coats should do nicely.

Cool idea.

That's awesome! thank you. My original idea is to take a Coca-Cola bottle cap and secure it over the end of the bars to hold the twine on that end. I really wasn't sure about how to start it so thank you very much for that. I think I'll use a cork too and just use the bottle cap to hide that.
And thank you for the kind words herr_rudolf!

Re: My Road Bike I asked you's about.

Probably some of the coolest ideas I have seen! The extensions and the riveted on tube are great!

Keep it up!

Re: My Road Bike I asked you's about.

I was able to wrap the twine like I wanted today. I need to shelac it later. However for now I will post these...
