Question about tire width

The front tire on my bike,a Huffy Express of unknown vintage,is 24x 1 3/8, the back is so far gone that I can't make out the size,but I assume it to be the original,probably 26x1.75. The question is,what is the maximum width i can safely put on these rims?

Measuring outside edge to outside edge,they are approx. 1 1/4 inches wide. and by "safely" I just mean won't blow off the rim when I air it up.....or ride it over potholes.

I've got a 20" wheel that wide w/ 2.25 tires on it. No probs so far.

I would say that 1 1/4" wide rim will safely hold any balloon tire. I have skinnier rims with 2.125 on them.
