Positron 5 speed

I have a Schwinn hurricane 5 speed with this positron shifter setup. What is supposed to hold the cable housing into the derailer? Some kind of clip? Where do I find one? Can you even get a cable for this setup?

Okay, maybe that's not it. A little searching indicates that early Positron uses 2 cables, and later uses a solid cable like a lawn mower throttle, neither of which can be cut to length and has to be a specific-to-application fit. Seems to me to be something not worth fixing other than for concours type restoration. I won't tell you what the roadie mechanics said to do with it.

Yeah it's a solid push/pull cable with molded ends on the housing. The molded end has a groove around it that looks like a C clip would lock it into the derailer.
