Close up of the rear extender piece now that it has been modified and bolted to the arm (i did have to shave a little off the end to make it slide into the bracket)

Here is the springer bracket
If you notice I had to trim off a small part to help it clear the seat post tube
with out doing that I never would have been able to have enough drop in the rear for the desired stance
I will be drilling a hole in the seat post tube so I can attach the top end area of the attachment

Here you can see that the arms of the attachment will be running on the outside of the frame

Getting the new bb ready to attach to frame
Its off the Columbia double eagle tandem that I cut up last year

One of the best parts about this particular bb is it only has one small hole where the seat tube was originally attached
I will use that as the initial location area where it will be bolted to the frame followed by two other u-bolts that will keep that bb in place no matter how hard I peddle
just need to drill the hole right in that center bar between the two frame rails

On another note this is the sissy bar i will be using
lots of bolt locations to use in order to get proper look and riding position

been busy with a few things one of them being a new part acquisition for a different bicycle that i want to immediately start working on

I Bought this bike a few years back because i really like the stelber designed frame
look at this lower frame design it just screams early boadtrack style

But it was the purchase of a Dana 3 speed transmission that happened to be only 25 miles away and in my price range so i will be dedicating these last 2 weeks to hopefully getting this built up

My idea with dynamo is to turn the dana into a jackshaft and place it into the area of the bend in order to replicate the look of a motor on a vintage boardtracker

for anyone who is curious the bottom bracket uses standard 5/8 bearings with a cotter pin crank

The kit for installing the dana requires a standard American sized bottom bracket so i will be needing a new axle to turn it into a jackshafr

The dana 3 speed isn't light one huge plus for making the dana into a jackshaft is the original crank and arms are almost half the weight of the entire dana transmission not to mention its part of the rotational assembly so that's quite a reduction
even if I will be adding weight to make a mounting system

I am trying to keep the majority of bike original but one thing that will be upgraded is the seat post
original is a quill style and is being replaced with this lucky 7 style quill seat post
unfortunately I don't remember how or where it was acquired

I also had these truss rods from another fork that was bolted on
now i can keep the original stelber fork but turn it into a fork that mimics the boadtrack style

Since I am using the dana as a jackshaft I need to find out what the actual gear ratios are
I found some info only stating how much percentage over or under standard drive the gears where but unfortunately that isnt enough info to help me

I installed the dana on a standard schwinn frame with a 20t rear coaster and counted the rotations of the rear wheel

Using the stelber as a base with a 20t rear coaster here is what I found

Base stelber with 46t sprocket & 20t rear coaster = 2.3 to 1 ratio (2.3 rotations)

1st gear is equivalent to a 2.9 to 1 ratio
2nd gear is equivalent to a 2.3 to 1 ratio
3rd gear is equivalent to a 1.7 to 1 ratio

I will be revealing why this is important to me in a future post
 
Ordered some of these nickson 1" air tube clamps from O'Rielly auto to mount the dana to the frame

Here is the rough mockup with 5 clamps lined up with the bolts from the dana
just need to get either get some steel plate or steel square tube to use for attaching
I want to try and use 4 since i feel it has the look of the boardtrack frame/motor mounts
but the dana without the crank and arms weighs almost 6lbs
so I may need to use a 5th mounting area
btw the crank weighs 1.7lbs and the arms weigh 2.7
that 3 speed if I was to run it altogether is over 10lbs

Just fyi, in case you missed it.... the BO 18 ends on July 31 this year, not Sept as in recent years. New "4 Build Off" format per year now in vogue!

Thanx 4 the heads up one of the other reasons I decided to go with this build at such a last minuet is that since everything is bolt on and I am trying to keep it as original as possible
I can simply switch out the dana setup and go back to a stock drivetrain and just post the bike in a basic setup
although the name of the bike will not make as much sense since I used a name that had something close to dana
hence the name DYNAmo
other options where dynamite and dynamic
but I have 7 days from today to get the dana to work


In case anyone is interested in the how I figured out what rear sprocket size to use
I used evolventdesign.com online converter to help

here is the baseline 46 x 20 original stelber drivetrain

1st gear equivalent to 58 x 20

Love the chain guard up high like that!

No time to waste so I'm compelled to suggest that you check the chain line before you get too far into mounting the Dana. Right now it's looking like it will pass right where the frame crosses the tire. :39:
