Hi! i have the same bike and i use it allso in wintertime 
but i changed the backhub to a 7 speed freecoaster(im not sure about the english term) with rollerbreakes, and i use 2,3" kenda flames tires also in winter with no probleme, with these breaks it stops the bike safely in every circumstances...
