Yeah, a lot of the aftermarket Schwinn type springers do have a longer tube on them with extra threads to cut to the perfect length!
 
And the Schwinn steerer tube has that piece of tubing welded across the bottom which could be sliced longwise allowing it to saddle over the lower link I had made. Lots of welding area..
