Re: First Ride in 50+ years: Too Soggy to Ride so Walked

Thanks MadzaFlyer, I hope he kinda "gets" it,
Glad to here your FIL recovered through being active

Kingfish, I'll have to see if and when the plan comes together
Thanks for the suggestions, they sound funny

You Betcha Luke
I hope you can go riding too Mikee, especially to DQ
I'll keep everybody posted Jerry

I got my Grand Nephew signed up on our site now too "JeremiahIsRad"
while in Oregon last week, his avatar is the DiamondBack I got him a few years ago
He was really impressed with Randy's videos and wants to make some too 8) :D
Looking forward to seeing his adventures, he will be visiting next month
and he can go for a ride with his great grandpa again
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=54249&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=60

Before we left for Portland, We were hoping to go for a ride but it just got done storming (9Jun)
So we headed to Bridgeman's for shake and burger
Saw this cool rod with a Buick 455 in it  8)
IMG_0758.jpg

FIL was in a good mood because it was finally sunny after a week of rain and clouds
(It had just stopped minutes before we left)
Also because he gets a strawberry shake (old school) with his burger
IMG_0759.jpg

He asked if we could ride a round a bit and I happily agreed,
it was nice to have the sunroof open as we drove around the lakes
Stopped in at Lake Nokomis for a short walk
People were out in droves to soak up the recent sunshine
IMG_0760.jpg

We hung out a little bit more then drove home
Not sure if he understood we'd be in Oregon the next Sunday so there was a week we'll miss

Next Sunday (23Jun), I'll install the Father's Day present, a bike horn,
my wife it for at Portland Art Museum's exhibit "Cyclopedia"
Can you tell she is her father's daughter?
IMG_0870.jpg

Hopefully we get more riding in soon if the weather gods permit...
Thanks for looking
Steve

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: Too Soggy to Ride so Walked

That's a cool truck. I kinda like that color scheme to. Do you know was that a silver or grey paint or a primer?
Always good to see you two out and about whether on bike or not.

Welcome aboard JeremiahIsRad.

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: Riding around trees

You're right Randy, I wish I could have heard it start up
Grey primer at this point. looks like he was doing some body work
This week was warm and dry enough, so we rode :D

Randy, thanks for the welcome to JIR :D
He sure likes your videos, thanks for inspiring him

So last Friday (21Jun) we had a pretty bad storm
FIL's power went out but the phone land lines was okay
Went down to check, he was in bed, and finally asked us if he could go back to sleep
The power was up for him the next day but many others not for 3-4 days

It wasn't a tornado or straight line winds
but when the sky turned green we knew we were in trouble
It took out (kinda randomly) 1-2 BIG trees (our of ~30) on almost each block

But it wasn't raining just warm and humid and FIL was ready to go :D
It was his first "shorts" ride and he asked again about swimming
But with the recent huge washout, it's sometimes not the healthiest
This Sunday looks good for a swim so that next plan...

We installed the new horn but not sure if he thinks it's too silly
IMG_1024.jpg

We took off knowing we would have to ride down streets and not get through
They were cleaning some of them up but it took only the biggest trees out
Took out the curb on this one, wild!
IMG_1025.jpg

FIL was determined to get DQ so we went around a few more tree blocked streets
IMG_1028.jpg

Think FIL was happy to enjoy his strawberry sundae on a hot day (in shorts)
IMG_1030.jpg

I said "We finally got summer" and he said "The temperature was exactly right" (~92F)
He was raring to go for a bike ride and we did our river route (~5mi),
He did great with many bikers out and about
He kept catching up to me (in the Eliminator) and I think he was playing a bit
IMG_1031.jpg

River road was pretty clear but back on the side streets more downed trees blocking
IMG_1033.jpg

Rode around the blocks and found into this one that took out the sidewalk and Subaru
IMG_1035.jpg

Got home and kicked back in the shade and got him some water
Talked about mowing the yard (several times...) and hung out with Poppy
IMG_1036.jpg

Both of us enjoyed the warm summer day, and are happy its finally summer
Thanks for looking
Steve

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: Riding Around Trees

Glad everyone was OK after the storm.

I missed commenting on the last update, but was that a reuben on your plate? Whether it was or not, it made my mouth water.

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: Riding Around Trees

Glad Fil was able to get his DQ, that would not have been good! Those are some strong winds to knock those big trees. Roll on.

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: Riding Around Trees

man, between yours and Randy's reports, there must have been a lot of trees down in the heartland!

glad you made it to DQ! :D

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: DQ&Bikes, Never too Young or Old

Thanks Ndaway! Yeah I'm kinda bummed out we lost some of our nice big trees
Sure glad it didn't rip through and take out all of them

Youthgeye, thanks, I didn't here of any big injuries because of it, thank goodness
Yes Sir! That WAS a Reuben! One of my favorite sandwiches, glad to have a fellow big fan :D

Yeah Jerry, I saw a lot of trees down at Randy's too.

So the plan was to ride to the beach and go "swimming" (more like splashing  ) then DQ
FIL has been talking about it for months and so I told him the plan we had made last week
He says "Are you going into the water?" I said "Yeah! Don't you want to?"
FIL says "I'm not getting into the water!" :? :?:
So for some odd reason, he changed his mind but that's okay...

The rough weather has been over for a while but we are still cleaning up
Mpls is now using semi trucks and trailers to haul the debris out but still a lot around
IMG_1074.jpg

FIL was in a good mood so I was happy to see that
I must be getting old and set in my ways because I keep getting the same thing at DQ too
IMG_1076.jpg

So we were eating our DQ and couldn't help watching this guy and his young son
The little guy kept going , "Mmmm, Mmmm" every time he took a bite
Then he would stop eating and in a very eloquent manner, talk to his Dad, in perfect jibberish little-kid language
I started talk with the guy and said that his kid was just cracking me up (and FIL was laughing too)
IMG_1077.jpg

The Dad was a really nice guy and we talked about how his little guy he love DQ
He said it took him 40 minutes to eat a cone the other night with his wife
Also how he had the kid seat mounted in front and it was was so much more interesting for his son
and he could talk better with him too

Asked if I could take a pic and he said yes, The DQ on his face and bike helmet were awesome! :D :D
IMG_1077II.jpg

As we were leaving, I asked FIL to honk his horn for the little guy
So he did but the little guy thought it was kinda loud (from his expression)
Then FIL reaches down an raises up his whole bike so the little guy could try it
The little guy got a little shy and cautious but it was a nice gesture on FIL's part
And really amazing that FIL yanked up (and held) his 30 lbs bike like it was was nothing  :D

So we did our 5 mile river ride and hung out in the backyard for a while
FIL and me are sure enjoying summer!
Thanks for looking
Steve

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: DQ&Bikes, Never too Young or Old

Just catching up on the past few rides.
Your wife is definitely the DOFIL. :)
Glad everyone was okay from the storms, that was a lot of downed trees.
Love the Eliminator!
It's funny contrast that the father put the child seat on the front so he would have room on the back for his box of Johnny Walker liquor!!! :p
Happy Trails buddy and thanks for the updates.

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: DQ&Bikes, Never too Young or Old

Great photo catch of the little guy! :D

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: No DQ but still Cake

You Betcha Luke, thanks!

"DOFIL" that's super funny Kingfish
Yeah it's funny to have the little one up front and the box in back
I think he liked the "Old Box" more than JW on it, didn't seem like a total partyer or anything
Nice Cannondale bike too so just a interesting mod
And Happy Trails to you too! :D

Glad you like the pic of the little kid Jerry, lucky I caught the moment

So we didn't get out for a ride but FIL got some Bday cake
It was "Little Guy"'s Bday and he is still having fun on the chopper
IMG_1149II.jpg

I guess he is now riding Mag Ray (and he likes it) but there has been a glitch
He comes up to me and says in a very sad, quiet voice
"You know my Grandma stored the stingray in her garage for the winter, but it got rusty"
I just laughed and said "I can fix that, no problem buddy!"
I think I might paint it now too, plus he let the "big kids" down the block and the tire is flat too
So I'm waiting for it to get over here and I get him all sorted, need to get a ride shot yet...

There was "Beamo" cake AND Cupcakes my wife made. Mmmmm!
IMG_1160II.jpg

IMG_1145II.jpg

FIL toughed it out in the 92F+ heat (humid too) for a few hours
He enjoyed the great food, the sweets (of course), and the water fights really cracked him up
Here he is mellowly watching Little Guy open presents
IMG_1162II.jpg

Tomorrow we should get a ride and DQ in, hopefully with a group...
My Sister In Law and Great Nephew are arriving today for a 2 week visit
I'm setting them up with bikes to ride around (and to DQ of course) during their stay
FIL will be in super happy

We're enjoying the summer seat and fun times
Thanks for looking
Steve

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: No DQ but still Cake

waiting for the new pictures of the ride!

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: The Gang Goes Ridin'

Your wait is over Jerry

So as if you might not have got yet, My Sister In Law (SIL) and Great Nephew (J) are in town
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=74904
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=74884
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=74942
J is rather enthusiastic about his his new rat rod bike I built for his Bday
He's learning the ropes of posting here and is riding more and video gaming less :D

So last Sunday (14Jul) we got the whole gang together for a DQ ride
IMG_1219.jpg

It was great to see all the bikes I've put together getting good use
This is one of my favorite shots: FIL and J: 70 years apart and connected by 4 generations and bikes :D
IMG_1222II.jpg

The parade got to DQ just fine and everybody was enjoying their treat on a hot summer day
IMG_1226.jpg

Thought I should include my wife's nice shot too, Thank You Honey!
The guy in the background saw my Eliminator and said;"I used to have one just like that in the 70's"
I said, "It's a 70's bike but modded a bit" He says "Its got one of those seats,... um, a Banana seat, yeah!"
He had a big smile on his face and I'm glad could help bring back a happy memory :D :D
IMG_1227.jpg

We took off after J was the last one to finish (FIL the first, of course  )
And headed down to the Lake street bridge over the Mississippi River
It had been a long time for my SIL and brand new for J
Realized that "Mpls' hazy summer days" end up because of wild fires out west or Canada (today from Canada)
IMG_1231.jpg

Nice shot of FIL, SIL, and J
IMG_1233.jpg

Took off down the usual River path and everybody was doing great riding single file
IMG_1238II.jpg

J had to "Ham it up" (like FIL) when he saw I was making a backwards shot. Can you tell they are related?
IMG_1229II.jpg

Thought I should let J head up the parade so he can get used to looking for city traffic and help out
He took his responsibility seriously and even gave the hand signals for FIL :D
IMG_1240.jpg

FIL was very happy that SIL took her bike so they all could get to DQ more often this week
We all had a great time!
Thanks for looking
Steve

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: The Gang Goes Ridin'

It was great to see my grandma ride again and it was a fun ride.

Really cool to have all the family involved. Haven't done that here in a while. The Grand-kids go to Alaska for the summer and it's hard to get everyone together during the school year for a ride but I'll keep trying.
