Natural selection is an amazing thing and so is chance. I don't live my life in fear of what "might happen", but i sure do prepare for the worst because if you're not looking out for yourself. who will?

Then you are all for the expanded use of helmets, like toddler helmets for the home, and helmets for car passengers? If you prepare for the worst then you should at least wear a helmet in all those situations where head trauma happens more often than it does by cycling. You would not believe how many people slip in the shower and smash their heads open, it happens far more often from this than from cycling. And there are other normal activities equally as bad. Kids and playground swings for instance. Why would you only choose to wear a helmet while cycling, when other situations are much more hazardous statistically. You seem to be very selective in preparing for the worst, and cycling certainly is not the worst thing you (or your kids) could be doing. I will think more about this too, and in what other potentially hazardous situations I should be wearing head protection. All those worst case scenarios that could happen?

And to COMPLETELY avoid any injury whatsoever...just strap this bad boy on.

When you crash...the ground bleeds.

I like the Star Wars stormtrooper helmet much more. This mask would be good in the shower though, or for part of my shower :D . I think its good that hockey players wear helmets for sure. Remember when they didn't use them and they got all their teeth knocked out? The dental bills

I'm actually enjoying this topic very much, its making me think more about safety in the home.

Actually...forget the helmet, just have Chuck Norris tattooed on your head and you'll never have to worry again.

I like that :D And if hockey players did this they would definetely intimidate the opposition. Its a great movie idea too "The man with the Norris tattoo!".

I wear one because i lost a friend to a traumatic brain injury as a child from a bicycling accident with no helmet and i have a relative that has approximately a 40% cognitive function loss due to a brain injury sustained while skateboarding with no helmet. Am i saying these things would not have occurred with a helmet on? NO, but i am all in favor of reducing my chances wherever possible.

You continue to not wear one and then i will be sure to snap up your bikes and other good stuff when/if you are vegetative. Thanks for the deals!! And if i slip in the shower and it happens to me, you are welcome to do the same.

This is like talking guns (the only place i don't carry is in the shower and even then i have one within 10 feet of me and wherever the socialists say i am not allowed to  ), politics, or worst of all religion.

I am sorry for your loss, I too have lost many friends to traumatic injury, mostly from car and motorcycle accidents And some from backward falls at home, bleeding in the cranium when their heads hit the floor . I have also lost 3 friends who have taken part in martial arts competitions, and bar fights  . Accidental death Is never a good thing.

I have to say it again though, most people who are maimed and injured in bike/auto accidents receive it from blunt force trauma. If you live in an area where the streets are too unsafe to do anything on - except drive a car - then its probably wise not to ride on them at all. If you want a safer future on your roadways for bicycles don't be satisfied with the current terrible situation. If everyone wore helmets here people would still get paralized and dead from impacts. But if we went the way of bike friendly cities in Europe we wouldn't need to be so fearful - if cars and bikes were seperate from each other.

Head trauma is far more likely from car accidents and car/pedestrian hits. The sad truth is I'm the guy out of a large group of friends who has survived till now (and without a helmet) while many have not, and none of them died on bicycles. Cycling without a helmet is the least of my worries on the road. Distracted drivers texting or using a cell phones while driving scares me. We need more Amsterdam style bike infrastructure to reduce injuries to all parts of the body. This will reduce far far more injuries while biking (including head injuries) than mandatory helmet use alone. Amsterdam has proven it. If we want to reduce all bicycle injuries we need separate bike lanes, not more helmets.

Guns? yes. I feel bad for the family of that 5 year old who shot his 2 year old sister dead, with the gun he got as a gift. His parents have a lot of time to think about that one now. But in the end its clear, death is for eternity, some get it sooner some get it later. Some get it prematurely I think that new plastic gun you can make with a 3D printer is interesting too. Every angry militant in the world will have a one shot weapon available to them. Hopefully all the injuries they perpetrate with them will be "self" inflicted wounds.

With bicycles anyways, if it's too unsafe to ride, I just don't ride
