I've waited quite a while to build one of these Going to be alot like the first mountain bike I ever had that I got from my older brother

I have most of the parts I need to decide what wheels to build first and get a sealed bottom bracket

Nedd to strip the anno off the Renthal bars and tuf neck

Re: 39 Schwinn DX going to be kluntastic

Cool build! I'm thinking about doing the same to one of my prewar frames. Isn't that a 40-41 frame because I thought the 39 Dxs were a 1 year only straight down tube.

Re: 39 Schwinn DX going to be kluntastic

hotness. Build the wheels with the hub brakes first, if ya ask me. I'm fairly jealous. What're you gonna do with the KHS fork?

PS-measure your headtube. The landrace fork is too short for my postwar DX frame.

Re: 39 Schwinn DX going to be kluntastic

Bicycle 808:Thanks for the headds up will definetly make sure steer tube is long enough as for the KHS fork I will put it to good use somewhere I have a few other schwinn frames that I will be building up with the parts I dont use on this build

1manta: The bars are some old aluminum Renthal's picked them up at a junk store for 3 bucks and at 33 wide they are bound to snag a few cows good thing I'm a meat eater

Crank!basti: thre crank is a Stronglight 93 from my Peugeot PX10 resto They came stock on early 70s PX10s (I went with Stonglight 49ds on the px 10 so these were leftovers)

Cheers and thanks for the props

OK, so what are your plans for the rubber? You gonna stick with the smallblock 8s? Those are fantastic tires, and I love them for most hardpacked conditions. I'm thinking you might go with something that looks more "period-correct", but I suspect that the SB8s will look fine if you can buff off or otherwise cover up the big "Kenda" printed in white on the sidewall...

ps-the Renthals are extraordinarily hott

Bicycle808: I totally agree I'm not really liking them either probably go with all black schwinn studded I have a few pair of them that I was saving for other builds

Ok its been quite a while since Ive done anything with this build, but a recent bike find with the right components has got me working on it again The last thing I did (a few monthes ago)was cold set the rear dropouts to 135mm to fit a Sturmey Archer X-RDC drum brake hub It was a lot eaiser than than I thought it would be(sorry no pics) I just used the big 2x4 method Then last week while I was waiting for the paint on another build to dry I started removing the crappy house paint that was on the frame

The welds were pretty rough so I did a little sanding to get them down smooth and There is a small hole drilled in the the seat tube I will need to repair

Here's the wheel set I built up last month I decided to go with (of course) Araya 7x hoops and Sturmey archer hubs front is the X FD and the rear is the X RDC with 14 guage wheelsmith spokes
41dxklunker007_zpsd1677fa9.jpg

The components I've have decided on Shimano 600 Arabesque crank with sealed bottom bracket 600 derailer's and Shimano deerhead thumb shifters

I stll need to clean the anno off the bars and decide if i want to go with a tuf-neck (I ended up using the red one I had planned for this on another build) or an ashtubula stem

I finally got around to cleaning the bars up and found an old Redline stem that works for now I'm gonna wait till the weather here gets better to do the paint And make a few other adjustments but overall I'm pretty happy with it so far
