There are plenty of great bars out there off the shelf...I'm partial to S&M Race XLT myself. If you don't know exactly what you want, custom bars aren't a great idea. For a klunker, I'd start out with something like some SE Super Big Honkin' bars. Moderate rise (~7"), very flat hand position. Fairly cheap and used take offs are fairly common.

We did a Arkansas road trip to pickup a State Yellowstone Klunker.

Checked tightness of bolts and fasteners, adjusted seat height. I added a “The Meteor” stem cap. Transaction completed at The Meteor coffee/bike/spirits shop parking lot In Bentonville.
The previous owner had changed out the saddle and I will change out the pedals.
The bike needs a bath as it was dusty at the pickup and we went through several rain showers coming home. Sweet riding bike.

Back in March I made my teen son very unhappy when I sold my black State Klunker so I could buy my longed-for Kona Humuhumunukunukuapua’a Deluxe. Ever since that day I’ve never heard the end of it from him, so when this Grand Canyon edition popped up at a great price an hour and a half away, and was still there at the end of my workday yesterday, I knew it was a sign that I had to go get it.
My favorite part is the SIX led headlights. My buddy described it as “It’s like an off road race truck light bar except instead of LEDs they used candles. Lots and lots of candles”.
These bikes are fun. Stoked to have another.

Can anyone confirm if I can use a Dia Compe MX1000 as a front brake on the State? It seems to be the longest reach side pull I can find.

I doubt you would need that much reach. Have a look at where the pads are set up on the calipers in the photos I uploaded.

I would be interested to know what others think of the reproduction Dia compe calipers. I have tried 2 different models and found them very lacking in performance compared to the Tektro. The stock pads are junk and replacing them with Kool stops didn’t help improve the braking either.

They are good for cruising and will handle dealing hard to a point where knowing the limitations of your equipment can be crucial. The fact that they are thde only 1080s made anymore makes them the "better thn nothing" option as a rear brake, which is alright because the rear brake is used mainly for control purposes.

Has anyone ever actually opened a bottle of beer with the STATE opener that comes on the bike? Can’t open a longneck, haven’t tried a stubby. Opener looks cool but should have been mounted higher but would interfere with seat tube.

Should probably be fork leg mounted
