Pre-63 sting-ray?

So I know a guy who picked up this bike today:



Here is what he told me:
"...guy said one was a sting ray. looking at the sr# it comes up as a 1959 frame the crank its stamped AS and 60 it has a AS seat clamp. they didnt make a sting ray until 1963.do you know what this thing could be?"

Anyone want to solve this one for him?

Likely a 20" '59 Spitfire. It was probably converted into a muscle bike a long time ago to avoid buying a new bike at the time because there was "a perfectly good bike in the shed" or something like that. So they put apes, a banana seat, and muscle fenders and called it a stingray to appease the kids.
