Nexus and "stick" shifter?

Anyone ever tried one of the older Shimano stick shifters with a nexus hub? How did it work? Pic? I bought a NOS shifter on the cheap not long ago and thought I'd ask the experts before I invested in a Nexus wheelset.

take a look here, at Kev's bike... he used a non nexus shifter with a nexus hub...

I added a Nexus 3 speed and Bendix toptube shifter to my Firmstrong Chief aka "DeeBo" .. It shifts with no problem.. It's still in its "mock up" stages so excuse the "ties"..
