It all starts with a frame.

Integrated bar and stem, I pulled this off a mid 80's mtb I had.

With a beast like this good brakes are important. Going OG with some Sturmey drum brakes.

Rear wheel gets brakes and gears all tucked into the hub. This thing is a tank, the hub is 1400g. I come from a hardcore mountain bike background so these weights are down right scary, I usually count grams when looking at parts, the next set of wheels I build will likely have a sub 300g rear hub.

Test fit some parts now that I finally have the wheels built.

Still lots of work left.

Need to track down a proper head-set with 32.5mm diameter for the 1" threaded fork. Will need to shave down the head-tub to make it work with this fork. Plan to remove the canti brake bosses off the fork.

I'd love to figure out some dark gun metal grey look finish for the frame that isn't paint. When I first got the frame I had plans to go with raw and rusting frame then everything else a gloss black, but the hubs spoiled that, then I couldn't find the rims from my source in all black. Oh well. If anyone can point me to a thread for alternative frame finishes it would be appreciated.

Have you considered buing compund, as used on guns and knives? It will leave a blue/black finish on steel parts, but it may take a couple of applications of the paste (working in small areas at a time) to get an even finish.

Gun bluing involves EXTREMELY toxic chemicals, and oven-like temps. There are newer cold bluing products available, but I don't know if they are any safer, or as durable. Nonetheless, I got plenty from google, here's the link. - http://www.google.com/search?q=gun+blui ... rt=10&sa=N

Really on the fence about how to finish this thing.

I'd like to leave it to naturally rust and age...but I want it really dark in colour almost black.

Also think I need to go dig up some painting wheels threads, I really want back rims.
