Fantastic bike you have there!
Lord Howe is top of the list of places I want to visit, looks like you're living the dream, building and riding custom bikes in a beautiful location.
If I make it over from Wellington I'd be happy to bring some parts with me for your next project, not that you need...
Hi Sam, I recognise that epicness that was Dromageddon!
Sam's right, getting stuck in is infectious.
Here's my one
p.s. post up your pedal bike in the scratch built section!
Made by a very talented chap
Just remembered about this video of us jousting last year, doesn't look too bad but there were some big hits, I came away with a sore jaw and some cracked ribs haha
I can get some rough dimensions, it wasn't built with much measuring involved haha
I used 40mm x 40mm for the main part of the frame and 40mm x 20mm for the forks and rear stays.
I have been thinking about painting it lately but letting it rust is so much easier
Thanks for the feedback guys.
The disc is custom made, I provided the measurements then they created a CAD drawing and cut it on a waterjet, you could also use a laser cutting place (which might be better as I had to de-burr some of the edges before installation).
I modified the frame slightly...
It's mounted with 12 M3x8 button head bolts and nyloc nuts.
I had to grind a flat on the side of each bolt head so they could sit snugly on the inside of the rim, it went together pretty easy other than that.
I hear what ya saying, the forks are pretty sturdy though, I'd probably have issues with where the steerer tube is mounted first, I'll keep an eye on it anyhow :)
I got the disc brake up and working
Initial testing down some big hills where I live was good but I need to replace the brake pads...
The coaster brake isn't adequate enough for hill bombing so the next step is a disc brake, a big disc brake
Rim mounted disc cut out of stainless on a waterjet, will be using an old mechanical mtb disc brake on it
Re: Dub's industrial build
Thanks for the comments :D
The wheelbase is about 1500mm (59"), height of the top tube is around 710mm (28"), bottom of the frame is about 3" off the ground.
Not sure about the weight but it is heavy, the frame on its own isn't too bad but by the time you add the...
Here's my first attempt at a scratch build frame
My idea was to build a bike from box section steel.
The main design points I wanted were, no down tube, a low top crossbar height, 80mm wide rims and something unusual for the forks
I ended up using 40mm x 40mm and 40mm x 20mm steel and some 32mm...
Cheers for the comments guys
kellis83 Regarding the acid dip I just took it to a company who specialise in it, I would have done it myself but had no time as I needed to take it on holiday. If you intend to powdercoat they may sandblast it for you, I went the dipping route because I was keeping...
Have made a few changes
Got a new (old) sprung seat, raleigh handle bars and some quick bricks
Also stripped the paint off an old chain guard I had and put that on, not 100% if I like it but I'll leave it and see if it grows on me
Hi all
This is a bike I built last year, when I started I had no experience in this kind of thing before, it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be (especially if you have a friend who can weld) so anyone thinking of giving it a go, do it!
I'm still doing some work on this bike, changing parts...
Hi there
Found this site recently, don't know how I missed it before, some sweet bikes on here.
I've got one I built last year which I'll start a thread for and am planning a new scratch built one right now.
Right, better get back to trawling through all the cool builds.
