Greetings! Been watching for a while decided to plunge. Lots of great stuff!
Bike nut since childhood, mostly conventional road & mountain bikes, but bought a Flying Pigeon (yeah I know) a few years ago on a whim which got me into rod brake roadsters for a while (the best one I still have is a ‘53 Japanese Ginko (that’s how it’s spelled on the badge)). A year ago I finally bought a’63 typhoon (again on a whim) with a poorly functioning red band kick back). It was a revelation! Up to that point I thought schwinns were prewalmart Walmart kid’s bikes. I got a ‘53 Meteor frame that had been laying around somewhere for a few decades and put a bunch of period parts on to get it going and have put five hundred miles on it. Also got a ‘54 Starlet skiptooth and another girls Meteor, both almost intact that I’m messing around with now. I finally got around to disassembling the two speed bendix and getting it working again on the Typhoon.
Any way I love ND (and all coaster brake) hubs and am fighting the urge to accumulate more Schwinns to experiment with.

Yes!!! I am halfway through my first build with rod brakes. A 1948 triumph. Build thread on this site. I also have a flying pigeon with rod brakes that I haven’t touched yet, but am really excited about.

I bought a “late model” (early 2000’s?) pigeon from now defunct Flying Pigeon LA about 10yrs ago. Pretty cheesy but I put a lot of miles on it after I replaced the saddle & pedals. I still have the frame. Not long after found a 60’s (?) pigeon on eBay, nearly intact, much more solid (and heavy!). A great bike that I’ve put lots of miles on.
My real prize (that I’m in the process of overhauling again) is a ‘53ish Japanese “Ginko”. Similar 30’s British style rod brake roadster. Better quality construction than the Chinese stuff, brake pads on the front seiko drum on the back, rock solid. The bike was original except for the wheels and saddle. I’ve put a few thousand miles on it.
I haven’t figured out my way around this site so I haven’t seen your triumph build thread. I’ll look for it. I had a ‘54 Phillips roadster also for a while that I overhauled but never rode much cause the frame was bent (I couldn’t figure out where). It was a beautiful bike with marvellous engineering but I got rid of it.

Is the black bike in the first pic the 63 Typhoon? The single speed redband hub it has is my favorite one speed hub.

Excellent. Thanks! I’ll post pix in a few. 50’s Japanese roadsters are a fascinating bicycle universe actually. After the war, Japan retooled a bunch of munitions factories (the ones that were left standing) for bicycle manufacturing…

Yes. The Typhoon is pretty much original. The white painted wheels in the background (with malfunctioning red band two speed kick back) came on it and I put the wheels you see on while I spent a month trying to fix the kick back (which I eventually did, and they’re back on the Typhoon). I’m partial to ND hubs but the Bendix red bands are great (and easier to work on).
