very nice looking bikes . how do you date the frame ? annoyingly I discovered while trying to put the bike back together that the forks are a 24" not the 26" that there meant to be so I'm now busy trying to find a suitably ratty looking set of 26" forks. I also now have to have a front brake...

adding front brakes to a 50's / 60's Murry bike

Thanks for all the advice guy's (sorry it's taken a while to post again but work has been manic) I've certainly gotten some ideas now. I think for the clean lines and look I might go with getting the Sturmey Archer hubs once I source some other 26" wheels and the forks . I'll le you know...

adding front brakes to a 50's / 60's Murry bike

So quick update. The tired came back from being trued and didn't need anything doing to them, so I really don't want to do a 're spoke job just yet. But worse of all was when putting the wheels back on it turns out the front forks are 24" not 26" so I now need a set of forks that work. .. Back...

adding front brakes to a 50's / 60's Murry bike

Hi Dr T I hadn't even thought of that as I'm still in the stripped down stage that's a good possibility . shouldn't look to bad either. I was considering a new Sturmey three speed coaster hub for the rear as well so shouldn't be outta place

adding front brakes to a 50's / 60's Murry bike

yep you have to have two working brakes on any bicycle in the UK by law. There was an accident recently where a cyclist killed a pedestrian on a "Fixie" he was only running one brake on the bike and it's been in the news so the police are going to be hot on it for a while...

adding front brakes to a 50's / 60's Murry bike

HI guys due to the laws in the UK I have to fit front brakes to my Murry / J.C. Higgins project and wondered if anyone had some advice on what would work. I'll be running 26x 2.15 tires on the bike and the rear has a coaster brake already. any advice would be really good. Thanks guys .

    50's / 60's Murry's / J.C. Higgins project bike.

so after having my on-going modern cruiser project stolen last month (based off a 26" ecosmo bike) I managed to score a new project off of ebay. a lovely barn find (including dead cicadas in the tank) not sure how original all the parts are to the bike and it's had a repaint in the past that...

    Hi from London England

Hi all. Well after having my modern cruiser stolen that I'd been customising I ended up purchasing a 50's\60's bike that's either a J.C. Higgins or a Murrys. Going to run it ratty with maybe some upgrades when I get time.
