Quick Gearing Question

On a 26 inch coaster brake cruiser which of the following is LOWER? 36/19 or 42/22. I dont need any technical specs just which gear.

The 36/19 is lower but only by the tiniest amount.

Thanks. The rear rim on my old Hornet rusted out and had a 22t Bendix rear cog. Trying to figure out how to repair without buying new cog to fit a Walmart rim.

If your Bendix is not the large flange type, you may be able to lace it into the wally wheel.

The equation is: 2x/(x+1) versus 2y/(y+1);
if 2x (42) is greater than 2y (36),
then 2x/(x+1) will be greater than 2y/(y+1).
And vice versa for lower.

Or, if you're talking about the same wheelsize (and, in this case, we are), you can just compare the ratios straight-up. 36/19=1.89. 42/22=1.9. To get gear inches, you just multiply either quotient by the theoretical wheel size. So, 49.14 versus 49.4. The gearing would be very similar in either case.

Umm, yeah. I'd go with 44 x 19 or just add or take a link or 2 out of the chain to make whichever is already mounted fit.
