I built several of these in 1980.
They worked very well when I had younger sibs about 4 years apart in age.
My youngest sister was 4 when I built it and the next was about 8. The youngest could not ride yet but could pedal. The older was able to handle it just fine. It's been around. Loaned out to numerous families with kids of the proper ages.
In 1980, no one wanted sting rays so I cut up a bunch to make these tandems. Oh, hindsight.
It's proven to be bomb proof. On it's maiden ride, 2 guys over 6 feet tall took it for a spin. No repairs needed other than an occasional flat tire. I used heavy duty bmx wheels with 36 twelve gauge spokes. This was the first and only one I kept. The others were sold off.
