I wonder what the transmission is....and does it allow a gradual transfer of power from the flywheel to the rear wheel.

That is a Nuvinci hub. Looks like the Nuvinci is just used to transfer the energy back and forth. The bike is probably a single speed since the Nuvinci does not have outputs on both sides. Cool concept but he didn't really show it being used from stopping to stopped to going again.
