    Your happy place

Five years ago today, during my first ever 20 mile bike ride. I remember being both exhilarated and completely wiped. 20 miles became a lot easier the more I rode, and I've hit 50 miles twice since then. Perhaps this will be the year I hit 100 in a day ride?

    Show me your stuff.

I've been doing a lot of woodturning since last summer, some of it with wood I've found while out riding. I come across a lot of fallen trees. I carry a folding saw and bungee cords in case I see anything interesting. Today I found a recently fallen Black Birch tree from which I collected a nice...

    ** Let's see your Bicycle Winter pic's **

I used to love riding in the snow and cold. I think I'm getting old and lazy.

What have you been riding lately?

It is a Budnitz Alpha, from a Vermont bike company that went out of business in the first year of the pandemic.

    Before & After Pics

Cool. Are there any odd handling characteristics from the much smaller front wheel?

What have you been riding lately?

It was a sunny and brisk 26F when I started my ride yesterday morning. Can't imagine why I had the trail to myself all morning. So quiet and peaceful.

were do you drawl the line? how many bikes are 1 to many?

I keep 2 of my bikes hung on our garage wall, along with my wife's. The other two are downstairs. But our garage is full of woodworking tools and supplies. I have a small shop in our basement, but all of the really messy stuff goes on out in the garage. Although I clean up and put everything...

were do you drawl the line? how many bikes are 1 to many?

I have 4 right now, and I think that's 2 too many. My most recent rebuild of Big Red is my best and favorite. Right off the stand there was nothing to adjust or tweak; just go ride. I keep saying I'm going to take a couple to the LBS and try to sell them on consignment, but I haven't got around...

What have you been riding lately?

One of the things I really don't like about this time of year is my lack of consistency. There's so much yard work - although I do enjoy being out in the fresh air - and so many other distractions. With a run of really nice weather, I found myself throwing open the garage a lot of days and just...

    ** Let's see your Bicycle Winter pic's **

Yeah, we just went through a run of really nice weather where its was cold at night but sunny and mildly warm during the day. Overnight we went to cold-wet-windy, though still sunny at times. Not ready to wrap my head around snow yet.

    Red Bikes

I've no idea what the frame is; the eBay seller had it misidentified, but it built up into a nice and comfortable riding single speed.

    Bikes in Autumn

Another 21+ mile ride along our Elk River this morning. Weather was a touch chilly most of the ride, warming to the mid 60s F by afternoon. Most likely the last day of good weather around here for a while, and I was a bit surprised I saw not a single person along the trail all morning. We've had...

    Bikes in Autumn

A rail trail two-fer this week: 20.5 miles on our Elk River Trail on Monday, and 32 miles on the North Bend Trail Friday. Yesterday it was 26F, dark, and foggy when I started, but turned into a beautiful, sunny day that was still noticeably chilly by the time I got back to the car. The western...

Nice start to the week and the month of November.

What have you been riding lately?

Let the day begin. A bit over 21 miles this morning. The 26 x 2.125 tires on this iteration of Big Red transformed it into a totally different bike. Very nice ride.

Another ride that started off very chilly and slowly warmed to a nice mildly warm day. Don't know which angle I like more.

    Bikes in Autumn

Typical Autumn morning in these parts today, chilly and foggy along the river, turning sunny after the fog burned away. Spent almost 3 hours tooling around on Big Red. Great start to the week.

    Bikes in Autumn

The return of Big Red Last Autumn I found an old steel bike frame on eBay, and over the course of some weeks, built it into a 650B mountain-ish thing, doing its maiden ride on Christmas Day 2020. It was a lot of fun to ride, but over the summer I stripped it of a lot of parts in order to outfit...
