MOON DUST CRUST

This Bike appeared on FB for $40 and I was going to pass it up. Friends here on RRB encouraged me to get it saying the saddle alone was worth the asking price.

This is the bike at the sellers home.

Maybe I should start with the saddle. Original shape is good but stiff.

I've been reconditioning it about a week. Disassembled the lower springs and mount, removed rust. Something that is very telling is how much better the Brooks chrome is than the GT chrome.

I just not a fan of those wheels. Seems like they would be more at home on a low rider. The originals were 36 spoke (sometimes with Moon discs)

Choosing bars. The original chrome GT moon bars were badly flaking. After an aluminum foil cleaning there wasn't much chrome left. Hit them with a flapped wheel and sprayed them black. I've seen several Mooneyes cruisers painted like that on the Net. Must be a common problem. I have one other set of 7/8" bars so I'm trying them too. You can get Sunlight Big D moon bars but they are 33" wide. I don't think I want to go there. The reach of the GT moon bars is 3" longer than the chrome cruiser bars.

Glad to see that you succumbed to the peer pressure and got that deal. Looking good so far.

I'm just glad you talked me into it. It's looking like it may become my new daily rider! I used what you said about the value of the saddle to justify it to the Mrs.😊😄😆

Cool! I'll buy the saddle from you for $40, then you can tell her you got the bike for free! :D :D :D
 
Had to make a front fender. The owner lost the original. I used an old Huffy cruiser front fender to make a shorty, bobbed fender like the original. I used a Dremel cutoff wheel to make the slots for the mount. Rivets attached the mount and filled the old fender brace holes. My first attempt was too long. After checking some Mooneyes pics I made a template and cut the leading edge even with the front axle.

The aviation shears made the metal too sharp. I bent the edge back using pliers for a break on the first try. That wasn't smooth so I used a bead of epoxy putty to thicken the front edge.

Mounted up. I had to spray Sun Bright Yellow over something like Yield Sign Yellow to get close to the original color.

It is done for now. I hope to find some chrome bars some day.

I ordered a pair of these caps from Moon Equipment.

The chain wheel was so rusty that when I cleaned it up there was no chrome. I repainted the back black per the original and coated the front with clear. Had to get a new logo from Mooneyes.

This is my favorite way to do taillights. Remove the type of aluminum LED lights that are held in the mount with an M5 bolt. Mount it on a rounded and deburred corner brace.

Also, When ever I really like a bike I replace all nuts and bolts possible with stainless steel components.
