I've got a 58 Schwinn spitfire and I should be out working on it tomarrow so I'll take a look. Just based on observation since mine was built in the USA (as I suspect yours was) I'm pretty sure we wil find the diameter to be american. BUT as older bikes tend to use a thicker wall tube steel it...
