That is the type ad that really gets me! I can handle when someone mistakenly misjudges the year, but all that rhetoric about it being in the family for years and that it has been restored is just blatant lying. :(
i find this kinda thing all the time.
my biggest pet peeve is when people take brats bikes and try to pass them off as sting rays.
that's when i call them out and offer them a ridiculously low price.
funny they want 200 for that bike when you can get them brand new for i think 165 or so if even that high.
craigslist is really a breeding ground for some of the biggest idiots i have ever seen
i should know im a Craigslist poster lol.

We have the same posting here, only it is someone else! I finally text messaged them some Giant made schwinn information, the price came down from $400 to $200

Yeah, me too. I tend to click on every ad for older bikes and classics and when I first glanced at that one I thought, "what's up with the reflectors? Those don't belong on a 57." Then I noticed the V-brakes and the aluminum wheels and the goose neck and... Heck, I'm not even sure it's a Schwinn. What's worse though is that it's not even assembled properly. The least he could do is fix the borks.

Is this bike really worth this much or is it in the eye of the beholder?

For a 7 speed with derailleur the MSRP is somewhere between those two numbers. $500 MSRP is more in line for an internal 7 or a 21 speed.

For the last month or so there just seems to be an incredible abundance of old bike boom 10 speeds for between $100 and $500. What's particularly depressing is that so many are just junkers too, rusty old Peugeots and Free Spirits that were mediocre bikes at best even back in the day.

Here's a good example. Not a bad looking vintage mixte, but $300? "Ready to ride"...except for those rotted out tires. I'm guessing the brake pads are probably hard as rocks too and who knows about the chain, free wheel and cables. The ad says it's in "new" and "original" condition though.

How about this budget oriented gem? Only $60 for a swell rattle canned Peugeot with bent forks, bent rear wheel and $30 extra if you want the tubes and tires.

Here's another one of those wonderful Peugeots. "Made in France so you know it's good." Womens frame and it looks like cr@p for only $175.

How about a Free Spirit for $120? I'm sure you're all itching to get in on that deal. This is easily the best deal of the bunch though.

Seriously, it seems like every cheapskate in Washington state decided that their clunky old ten speeds were now valuable collectors items and it's time for them to cash in.

I miss the days when people had realistic ideas of what these old bikes were worth.

What is even more appalling is how much people try to cutt me with their attempt at an offer!
-$400 -means offer $200!

It's one thing to ask $400 though for a bike that really is rare and collectable and another to ask it for something that's just kind of old. The guy asking $400 for a pre-war tank bike or a De Rosa actually has something good to sell. The guy asking $400 for a fixed gear Varsity or $200 for a Volkscycle is just trying to find a sucker and it sure is depressing to find more people out looking for suckers than trying to get rid of their old bike for a fair price.

Yeah we get that here alot, Giant Schwinns listed as 1950s vintage for $300
Raleigh commuters from the 80s listed as 1940s for $400 :) :)
But maybe like me, they want $ so list it for (2x$)=sale!
In the same breath, I always contact misleading sellers with the thought, "maybe they just don't know."
I have had some rude replies! Guy who was drilling frames for motor mounts with a 1/2" drill threatened my life over a texted question!

Somebody here really ought to buy this one. This is truly one of a kind and the price is right. I can only imagine the build time involved. It does appear to be 4wd. It also appears to be about the most impractical thing I've seen in my life, but I want it anyway.

My wife has emphatically told me "NO!" and it's too big for me to store inside. If you do buy it let me come by and get a good look at it.
